Assignments support mastering the California Language Arts standards relating to reading skills.

All classrooms in Evergreen School District adhere to the California Academic Content Standards of Instruction. Details may be referenced online at http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/. We strive for Proficient (80%) mastery of the standards by all students by the end of the school year. Remedial and alternative assignments will be given as needed.
    Scope & Sequence Overall Plan
o    Reading (9:30 – 10:40 AM daily;  Shared Reading, Guided Reading, English Language Enrichment)
There are 6 themes in the reading anthology; with 3 or 4 selections in each. Since we will normally spend approximately six days on each selection, the due date for the portfolio is predictable. To wrap up each theme, there is a formative assessment (test) to verify the degree of mastery of the included standards that is about 60% of the academic grade in Reading.

Grades accumulate approximately from 50% on tests, 25% on portfolios, 20% on quizzes (AR quizzes can only be done at school, using a computer), and 5% on projects, posters, etc. The Reading At Home is required, and must be submitted with EACH portfolio for the days that are encompassed. Usually, each story takes 6 class days, and is predictable. Each student is responsible to make sure all assignments are current, complete, and turned in when due. There is significant work on the portfolio practice book pages that should be completed at home as part of the 45 minutes per day for homework.

In addition to the portfolios, each student must read independently at home daily for a minimum of 20 minutes if that is all that is available because of family schedules, sports teams, etc. It is desireable for the reading to approach or exceed 65 mintues daily, as an average. For purposes of the Reading At Home log, the Weekend is a single entry that includes the totals from Saturday and Sunday.
