Mathematics
Assignments supporting the mastery of the California Mathematics standards for sixth grade are for work in class as well as for homework. The math standards for sixth grade are extensive; however, we aim to cover all of the sixth grade standards by the time of the California Standards Test in the first week of May.
Math grades come from approximately 50% tests, 20% quizzes, 5% posters and projects, and 25% portfolios of assignments. Each portfolio is an accumulation of all class notes, vocabulary exercises, graded quizzes and applicable tests. Each portfolio will be holistically graded based on evidence of study, completion of assignments and practice pages, vocabulary activities, with a table of contents, and an artistic cover.
Math Hour (11:20 – 12:30 daily, except on special exception days.)
We will be working towards mastery of all State Standards before CST testing, using California Mathematics by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. We plan on spending 70 minutes of instruction time on math daily, implying significant homework and study. There is math study and homework daily for ALL students, every day, including Fridays or the weekend; if the current lesson is already mastered, then each student is to accelerate to additional enrichment content, up to and including 8th grade Algebra. It is never acceptable for a student to claim, “I don’t have any math homework; I did it all in class.” Study vocabulary; review previous lessons; read and study ahead; memorize vocabulary concepts.Resources:
