  • History

Assignments that support mastering the California Social Studies and History standards for sixth grade: Ancient Civilizations. We start with Pre-History, cave dwellers, hunters and gatherers, and move on to agricultural shifts, towns, cities, and written records. We look at ancient architecture, religion, governance, economics, and other factors.

    Ancient Civilizations include:

    • Pre-History (before written records were kept)
    • Olmec, Mayan, Aztec, Inca in the Americas
    • Messopotamia, Assyria, Babylon, Hebrews
    • Egypt
    • African Kingdoms
    • India, especially the Indus Valley
    • Ancient China
    • Ancient Greece
    • Ancient Rome through the Fall of Rome

At the start of the first trimester, History will be about 2 hours per week during class, with some daily study and homework, especially taking notes for studying later. During the second trimester, the weekly class time will be approximately 3 hours per week. And for the final trimester, with the assignment of a large research project, the class time swells to about 4 hours per week. Tests will supply about 50% of the grade, quizzes an additional 20%, group collaboration projects 5%, and portfolios 25%. Each portfolio will be the collection of all end-of-chapter assignments, notes, essays, time lines, etc. collected into a single portfolio. Each portfolio must have an art project cover, a table of contents, all assigned work, and a
    ChecBric for assessing points.
